Athens, the capital of Greece is the oldest city in the world..... so we hopped on a plane to see what it is all about.
We received many frantic notifications and missed calls inquiring if we were okay due to the 6.2 earthquake in central Italy.... luckily we were in Rome where there wasn't any damage. We both felt the earthquake early that morning but both of us thought it was just the other moving around in bed.... we actually didn't know an earthquake occurred until after we boarded our plane for Greece. Our thoughts go out to the cities and people affected =(.
When we arrived in Athens we had to wait until we could check-in to our Airbnb so we decided to go check out Acropolis (I really need to schedule transit/housing times better). Here's some photos on the way there...

Cute little touristy streets filled with stuff to buy |

This was our first view of acropolis |

Almost to the top, the city looked cool through the trees |
I am so glad I brought our student ID cards since we got the tickets for all the archaeological sites for 15 euros a person which is half off! It was also nice that the tickets last for 5 days so you can break up the sites.
When we were done looking around Acropolis we decided it was a good idea to go put eyes on our Airbnb since our phone was dangerously close to dying. It was a slightly miserable 45 minute walk since we still had our backpacks and it was blazing hot... but we managed. After finding out place we decided to try some local cuisine.

The food was pretty dang good... even Ryan liked it! After dinner we did our favorite thing to do in new places... checked out the local grocery store. I must say that Greek is impossible to decipher.... like there is no guessing on what things say.
For instance,
σαμπουάν means Shampoo. Does that look like a word that screams shampoo to you?
Luckily almost everyone we've spoken to speaks English.
Anyways.... today we just checked out more of the archaeological sites... including the slopes around Acropolis that we didn't see the day before. Almost every site we went to had some pillars so I apologize if some of these seem redundant....

This fascinated us...why would they have just a head and genitalia?? |
Today might be our last day in Athens but we haven't figured out the logistics yet... hopefully tomorrow we have a plan.
Side note: I added a cool "Where are we?" tab at the top of the blog. It's basic but I like cool visual maps =). Enjoy!
Hey, I've seen one of these before at the Getti Villa! I took a picture of it as well and it's still in my 'cloud'. It includes some info about what they were for. http://imgur.com/a/SwFr1
