Cruising around Carpi!

So yesterday Ryan and I decided we would rent a boat and take a trip to the Island Capri off the coast of Italy!

Like most planned days.... we started off early since we had to catch a train that would take an hour and a half to get from Naples to Sorrento.

Ready to hit the road

We stumbled across some reviews for this specific train stating it had a major pickpocket and mugging problems so we made sure we kept our items close and distributed our money and cards in different areas of our bags...pockets...and bra =P. We didn't encounter any issues nor see any really shady people which was good...so we got to enjoy our day with piece of mind.

I was suppose to be navigating our course to Sorrento..... but I needed to take a Dramamine since my motion sickness is on high alert..... so I snoozed basically the whole train ride there. Unfortunately, I didn't check the directions before my snoozefest so we ended up getting off the train two stops pass where we needed to be. I added a 45 minute walk to our trip.... oops. We were going to be early anyways.

We got to enjoy some of this cute little town on our way to the docks.

We picked up some fruit from this fruit stand to take with us on the boat... best idea ever. Their fruit is so delicious! Before coming to Italy, Sorrento was what I imagined Naples to be... this town is so stinking cute!

We finally made it to the docks...

There was an elevator that you could take down to the bottom so you didn't have to walk down the switch-back road but they charged you .50 euro so we opted to just walk.

We got some instructions about the boat....picked up some sandwiches...packed the cooler and we were off!

Ryan driving.... of course his eyes were closed.
This was a little Selva Dinghy boat which can go pretty fast... but in the ocean that is unwise. We learned a few things right off the bat:

  • Don't sit in the front when driving fast. It hurts. A lot. The boat's nose kind of goes up when its driving and every time you go over a wave it comes down hard in the front. Lot of pain. At first I thought Ryan was just a terrible driver so I gave driving a shot.

So then Ryan got to experience the terrible pain of sitting at the nose of the boat. I guess it wasn't just his driving. =P

  • Don't drive too fast. We learned that over 40 (some sort of spin per minute thing x 100) it hurt a lot worse if you hit a big wave and it also made holding on to the wheel more difficult. Ryan almost lost his footing once.
  • We should have put sun block on before getting on the boat. We were so excited when we got on the boat that we just put sunblock on our face and arms and neglected the rest.... this was a huge mistake. We are still suffering from this stupid mistake.
We drove from the coast of Sorrento to the small island of Capri. We decided we weren't too interested getting off the boat and checking out Capri... instead we circled the Island and missed the spot where there is a sandy bottom to drop anchor... so we circled around again. We found the sandy bottom so we dropped anchor and jumped in! The water was super refreshing on the hot day. The boat rental place let us borrow some goggles so we were messing around with the GoPro and looking at fish. We then ate our yummy prosciutto, mozzarella, and tomato sandwiches.... accompanied with some wine the boat people gave us. It was an awesome day.

Faraglioni

I would have taken more pictures but frankly I was scared one wrong bump and the phone would have been lost forever. So we were mainly using the GoPro.... but we don't have time right now to go through and edit video.

After all the fun in the sun we took our burnt selves back to Naples. When we got back to the room we were so tired from the sun, sunburn, and wine that we passed out. Today we had to get up super early again to catch our train back to Rome since our flight to Athens leaves from Rome. We are now in our new Airbnb. We chose an Airbnb near the airport since our flight is at 0630... the guy who lives here is super super nice and picked us up from the train station and said he will drive us to the airport in the morning!! We are so grateful... sometimes getting to the airport can be stressful! Anyways.... tomorrow we will be in Athens, Greece! Can't wait for some Mediterranean food!

Ciao!
